A nasty reality of driving large commercial vehicles is that you have significant areas around the vehicle where you just plain can’t see other vehicles that might be present. It makes life on the road even more dangerous than it otherwise might be. Those “blind spots” take special skill to manage as well as you can, and demand care by other motorists as well.

WHAT IS A NO-ZONE?   The No-Zone represents the danger area around commercial motor vehicles where crashes are more likely to occur. The No-Zone represents the blind spots around CMV’s where cars and other vehicles “disappear” from the view of the CMV driver. There are five No-Zone areas that all drivers need to be aware of when sharing the road with CMV’s:

  1. SIDE BLIND SPOTS: The blind spots on both sides of a CMV are much larger than a car’s blind spots. Often, motorists believe they are in a safe area when driving alongside a CMV. This is not the case. When a vehicle travels in these blind spots for any period of time, it cannot be seen by the CMV driver. If the CMV needs to change lanes, contact wit the vehicle in the blind spot may occur.
  1. REAR BLIND SPOTS: CMV’s have a deep blind spot directly behind their vehicle. The CMV driver cannot see the vehicle of the trailing vehicle – and the driver of the trailing vehicle severely reduces his/her own view of traffic. Following too closely severely increases the chances of a rear end collision with a CMV.
  1. FRONT BIND SPOTS: Another critical No-Zone area is just in front of a CMV. When a vehicle cuts in front of a CMV too soon after passing, then abruptly slows down, the CMV drier is forced to compensate with very little time or room to spare. A motorist should be able to see the entire cab of the CMV in his/her rear view mirror before pulling in front of the CMV.
  1. WIDE RIGHT TURNS: When making a right turn, a CMV driver cannot see vehicles that are directly behind or beside the vehicle. Cutting between a truck and the shoulder or curb to the right increases the possibility of a crash.
  1. BACKING UP: When a CMV is backing up, it may block the street or roadway in order to maneuver properly. A motorist should never cross behind a CMV that is preparing to or is in the process of backing up. Vehicles that attempt this maneuver are entering the CSV’s blind spot.

Be aware of your No-Zones! Other drivers may not be aware of the size of your truck’s blind spots. Be vigilant in watching out for vehicles in the No-Zone. The No-Zone represents the danger areas – or blind spots – around CMV’s where crashes are more likely to occur. One-third of all crashes between large truck and cars take place in the No-Zone.
